How to use JSON Compare & Diff Tool

  1. Paste the older payload into "Left / Original" and the newer into "Right / Modified"; a sample pair is preloaded, "Load Benchmark Sample" restores it and "Clear" empties both.
  2. Decide on "Semantic Comparison (Ignore Key Order)" and "Strict Type Checking (1 !== '1')", both ticked by default.
  3. Press "Compare" and read the badges "+N Added", "-N Removed" and "~N Modified".
  4. Flip between the "Visual Differences" and "RFC 6902 Patch" tabs to see coloured rows or the raw patch operations.
  5. Press "Swap Left & Right" to reverse direction, then "Copy RFC 6902 Patch" or "Download Diff Report".

Worked example

Press "Load Benchmark Sample". The report lists 5 differences, +2 Added, -0 Removed and ~3 Modified. Modified: /status active to pending, /user/role admin to editor, and /user/settings/notifications true to false. Added: /user/settings/twoFactor true and /user/tags/2 "audit". The different key order of the two objects produces no entries at all.

When to use this tool

  • Finding what changed between two API responses captured before and after a deploy.
  • Producing a starting patch document to update a config through an RFC 6902 patch endpoint.
  • Confirming a data migration script left unrelated fields untouched.

Important limitations

Semantic comparison evaluates well-formed JSON data up to browser memory capacity. Incomplete or syntactically invalid JSON snippets must first be corrected with the JSON Formatter before structural diffing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the semantic toggle change what is reported?

Not in practice. Objects are compared key by key, so key order never counts as a difference even with the box cleared. The toggle only re-sorts keys first, which alters the order in which changes are listed.

How are arrays compared?

By index. Inserting an element at the front makes every later position show as modified, plus one addition at the end, because there is no move detection. Sort arrays or key them consistently first when order is not meaningful.

What does Strict Type Checking control?

With it on, 1 and "1" differ, as do true and "true". With it off, values are compared as text, so 1 equals "1", and null equals the string "null", which may surprise you.

Can the patch be applied as is?

It uses RFC 6902 operation names with pointer paths, escaping tilde and slash. However, array removals are listed in ascending index order, which can misfire when applied one after another, and remove and replace entries carry an extra oldValue member. Review before use.

What happens if one side has a syntax error?

Each side is parsed separately, and the message indicates whether the left or right input failed with the parser's wording. Comments, trailing commas and single-quoted strings are rejected.
