How to use Typing Speed Test
- Open "Sample Difficulty" and choose Beginner (Single sentence), Intermediate (Standard paragraph) or Advanced (Complex vocabulary); the passage appears in the grey box above the typing area.
- Click the text area under it and start typing the passage exactly as shown. The clock starts at your first keystroke, not when the page loads.
- Watch the four tiles while you type: Net WPM, Raw WPM, Accuracy and Elapsed. Backspace works, and corrected mistakes stop counting against you.
- When you have typed the full passage with at least 95 percent accuracy, the timer stops and a chime plays.
- Press "Restart Test" to clear the box and reset the tiles, or switch the difficulty, which also resets the run.
Worked example
The Beginner passage is 73 characters long. If you type it in 20 seconds with 67 characters in the right place, Raw WPM is (73 / 5) / (20 / 60) = 43.8, shown as 44. Net WPM is (67 / 5) / (20 / 60) = 40.2, shown as 40. Accuracy is 67 / 73 = 91.8 percent, shown as 92%, which is under 95, so the timer keeps running.

- Measuring a baseline before a data-entry job application that lists a minimum speed.
- Warming up your fingers with the Advanced passage full of technical vocabulary.
- Comparing your speed before and after switching to a new keyboard layout.
Important limitations
Word definition, keyboard, language, and error-penalty conventions still make scores across sites incomparable, even at matching durations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Net WPM and Raw WPM?
Raw WPM counts every character you typed divided by five, per minute. Net WPM counts only characters that match the passage at the same position. Net is therefore never higher than Raw, and both show 0 until about 1.2 seconds have passed.
How is accuracy measured?
Keystroke by keystroke as you type, including corrections: each character you type is judged against the passage at your current position, so backspacing to fix a mistake removes its error rather than cascading into everything that follows. Accuracy is the matching share of your final, corrected input.
Does the test have a fixed length such as 60 seconds?
The original passage-completion mode still has no countdown. A new mode picker also offers real timed runs (15/30/60 seconds) and word-count runs (10/25/50 words), each ending exactly at the chosen limit.
Why does my speed differ from other typing tests?
The sample is short, the same three passages repeat, and the clock begins on your first key. Words are standardized as five characters, spaces included, so long words and punctuation weigh more than in tests that count actual words.
Are results saved or ranked?
No. Nothing is stored, no personal best is tracked and there is no leaderboard. Write down a result yourself if you want to compare sessions.
