How to use Online Notepad
- Type in the "Private note" box; the Words, Characters and Lines counters refresh on every keystroke and the status line shows SAVED LOCALLY AT plus the time.
- Manage multiple notes: use "New note", "Rename current note", and "Delete current note" to keep separate named notes in your browser storage.
- Optionally protect any note with a local AES-256-GCM password; notes are encrypted locally before saving so only someone with the password can unlock them.
- Use "Download TXT" to save a backup, or "Import TXT" to import a text file as a note. If a note with the same name already exists, the tool asks for confirmation before overwriting.
- Multi-tab sync keeps open tabs aligned automatically, alerting you if conflicting edits occur. Toggle "Markdown preview" to view formatted headings, lists, bold text, and links.
Worked example
Type two lines: "Buy milk" and, below it, "Call Sam". The tiles show Words 4, Characters 17 (8 + 1 line break + 8) and Lines 2. Reload the page and the same two lines return; "Download TXT" then saves them as note.txt.
When to use this tool
- Holding meeting notes in a tab that survives an accidental close.
- Parking a code snippet for a few minutes while you switch editors.
- Importing an old .txt draft, editing it and downloading the result.
Important limitations
Notes are stored in browser localStorage on the current device and domain. Clearing browser browsing data, private browsing modes, or switching devices will not retain saved notes.
Frequently asked questions
Will the note appear on my phone as well?
No. Storage is tied to this browser and this site address, so another browser, a private window or another device shows an empty note, and clearing site data deletes it. Multiple tabs of the same browser do stay in sync automatically now, with a warning if you edit the same note in two tabs at once.
Can I keep several notes?
Yes. You can create, rename, and delete multiple named notes, each optionally locked with its own local password (AES-256-GCM, nothing sent to any server). Import checks note names and asks before overwriting an existing note.
How does the counter treat words and lines?
Words are whitespace-separated chunks, so well-known is one word and a lone dash counts as one. Characters counts every code unit including spaces and line breaks. Lines counts newline-separated rows, and an empty note is 0.
Is there a size limit?
Browsers commonly allow around 5 MB of local storage per site, shared with this site's other tools. A very large paste may fail to save without a visible warning, so keep long documents in real files.
Does it support formatting?
The editor itself stores clean plain text or Markdown characters. You can click "Show Markdown preview" to render headings, bold/italic text, code blocks, lists, blockquotes, and links in a formatted view alongside your plain text.
