How to use Flatten PDF Online Free
- Select a single PDF under "Select PDF to Flatten & Lock Form Fields", or choose "Select Multiple PDFs" to queue a batch.
- In batch mode, inspect detected form fields and annotations for each queued file.
- Keep "Flatten AcroForm Fields" ticked to turn fillable fields into fixed page content.
- Decide on "Flatten Annotations & Comments"; annotations with a stored appearance are drawn into the page, and any that cannot be drawn stay in place and are listed.
- Press "Flatten & Lock PDF" (or "Flatten All" in batch mode) and wait for processing to complete.
- Download the flattened PDF, or download all flattened documents in a single ZIP archive.
Worked example
Load a 2-page application form with 3 text inputs and 2 checkboxes. The summary tiles read 3 Text Inputs and 2 Checkboxes, and the status says Inspected the file: 2 pages, 5 form fields ready for flattening. After Flatten & Lock PDF and download, the typed answers appear as fixed text in the file named after the original with -flattened added.
When to use this tool
- Sending a completed application so the answers cannot be edited by the recipient.
- Making a filled form print identically on programs that mishandle fillable fields.
- Archiving a signed questionnaire as a static document.
Important limitations
Flattening converts interactive text inputs, checkboxes, and signatures into permanent vector and text shapes; annotations without a stored appearance cannot be drawn and are left in place. Password-protected files must be unlocked before batch or single flattening. Once flattened and saved, form fields cannot be made interactively fillable again without recreating the form fields.

Frequently asked questions
Does the annotation option burn comments into the page?
Yes for annotations that carry their own stored appearance, such as stamps, drawings, highlights and notes from most editors: that appearance is drawn into the page before the annotation is removed, and the "Flattening" panel reports how many were baked. Annotations with no stored appearance cannot be drawn, so they are left in place and listed. Links are kept unless you choose to remove them.
What happens to typed form answers?
With the form option ticked they are drawn as static text on the page, so recipients see the answers but cannot edit them. Fields that were empty simply vanish.
Does Lock in the button name add a password?
No. The PDF gains no password and no permission restrictions. Lock here only means the form fields are no longer editable; add a password afterwards with the Protect PDF tool if you need one.
Can flattening be undone?
Not by this tool. The original field structure is discarded and nothing keeps it, so hold on to your unflattened copy if you might need to edit the answers again later.
Can I fill the fields before flattening, or convert pages to images?
Yes. Detected text fields, checkboxes and dropdowns appear as inputs under the summary, and their values are baked in and listed in a before/after table. The Method menu can instead convert every page to an image at 100 to 300 DPI, which removes selectable text.
Can I flatten multiple PDF files at once?
Yes. Under Batch Flattening, select or drag in multiple PDF files. The queue inspects each file's form fields and annotation count client-side. Clicking Flatten All processes the batch and provides a single ZIP download containing all flattened documents. If any file is corrupt or encrypted, that file is flagged with an error badge while the rest of the batch completes normally.
