How to use Pomodoro Timer
- Choose a "Session Mode": Focus Session (25 min), Short Break (5 min), Long Break (15 min) or Deep Work (50 min); changing it resets the clock.
- Press "Start Focus". The label becomes Pause and then Resume, and the tab title shows the remaining time, for example "(24:59) Pomodoro Focus".
- Watch "Session State" move between Ready, In Progress and Paused.
- At 00:00 a two-note chime plays; Focus and Deep Work sessions add one to "Completed Pomodoros", while breaks add nothing.
- Press "Reset" to restore the full length of the selected mode, and pick the next mode yourself.
Worked example
Select "Focus Session (25 min)" and press "Start Focus". After one second the display reads 24:59 and the tab title becomes (24:59) Pomodoro Focus. When the clock reaches 00:00, the chime sounds, Completed Pomodoros changes from 0 to 1, and Session State switches to a focus-complete message.
When to use this tool
- Working in 25-minute blocks with a visible title-bar countdown.
- Using the 50-minute Deep Work mode for a long writing session.
- Timing a 5-minute break so it does not stretch into twenty.
Important limitations
The timer tracks a real end-timestamp, so the countdown stays accurate even if this tab is backgrounded or throttled, your computer sleeps, or you reload the page.
Frequently asked questions
Does it start my break automatically?
No. When a session ends, the state text tells you to take a break, but you must select Short Break or Long Break and press Start. There is no four-cycle count or automatic long break.
Is the timing exact in a background tab?
The clock subtracts one second per timer tick, and browsers slow timers in hidden tabs, so a long session can finish late. The tab title is handy for glancing at progress, though it inherits the same drift.
Does the completed count survive a reload?
No. The counter lives only in page memory and returns to 0 whenever the page refreshes. There is no stored history, streak or daily total to look back on.
Does Deep Work count as a Pomodoro?
Yes. Both the 25 and 50 minute modes increase the counter when their clock reaches zero, while finishing the 5 or 15 minute break modes leaves the number unchanged.
Can I set a custom length or silence the chime?
Only the four preset lengths exist, with no field for custom minutes, so use Countdown Timer for other durations. The chime is generated with Web Audio, and a muted device or blocked audio leaves only the on-page state text and the title.
