Simple, transparent workflow

How to use WebP to PNG Converter

  1. Add files with "Select WebP Images (Single or Batch)"; the first appears under "Converted PNG Preview" and every file gets a row in the "Conversion Queue".
  2. Open "Transparency / Background" and keep "Preserve Alpha Transparency (RGBA 32-bit)", or flatten onto White, Black or "Flatten to Custom Color…" and choose a shade in "Custom Background Color".
  3. Choose "Output Dimensions": 100% (Original Resolution), 75% Scaled, 50% Scaled or 25% Thumbnail. Conversion reruns automatically after each change.
  4. Press the Checkerboard, White, Black or Magenta button in the "Transparency Checkerboard Inspector" to test soft edges against different backdrops.
  5. Compare the WebP Size and PNG Size columns, then click "Download Current PNG" or "Download All as ZIP".

Worked example

Drop sticker.webp, a 512 × 512 image with a transparent background. Choose "Flatten to White Background (#FFFFFF)" and "50% Scaled". The queue shows 256 × 256 for sticker, the preview turns opaque white behind the artwork, and "Download Current PNG" saves sticker.png. Switching back to Preserve Alpha restores the transparent corners at once.

When to use this tool

  • Opening a downloaded web graphic in an editor that rejects the WebP format.
  • Batch-converting a folder of product images, then flattening them onto white for a marketplace.
  • Inspecting a cut-out logo against magenta to spot leftover fringe pixels.

Important limitations

Converts raster WebP image files to 32-bit RGBA PNG format. For animated WebP files, the browser decodes and exports the high-resolution first frame as a static PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

PNG is always lossless and this tool applies no palette reduction, while many WebP files are lossy. Expect the PNG Size column to exceed the WebP Size column, sometimes by several times for photographs.

Does converting to PNG restore detail lost by lossy WebP?

No. Compression artifacts already baked into the WebP are preserved exactly. The PNG simply stores those decoded pixels without further loss, so it is a safe container, not an enhancement.

Are animated WebP files converted to animated output?

No. The converter draws one decoded bitmap onto a canvas and saves a still PNG, so motion is not kept. Use a video or GIF tool on this site if you need the animation.

When should I flatten instead of preserving alpha?

Flatten when the destination cannot show transparency, such as a print template or an ID upload form. The chosen colour is painted first and the image drawn over it, giving a fully opaque PNG.

What happens to a file the browser cannot decode?

It is skipped with an error in the developer console and does not appear as a row in the queue. Check that the file is really WebP, since a renamed JPEG or a damaged download will not convert.
