Unlock Password-Protected PDF
Remove a password you already know from a PDF in your browser; text, links and bookmarks are kept. Your files are never uploaded to our servers. ToolkitPoint processes them on your own computer, so confidential documents stay with you.

How to use Unlock Password-Protected PDF
- Select one or more locked files. Each document gets a plain-language card that says whether it needs an open phrase, only has restrictions or is not encrypted, and which algorithm it uses.
- Type the known password in "Enter PDF Password"; use "Show" to check it, or leave it empty for a file that only restricts printing or copying.
- Press "Unlock & Remove Password". Every file is decrypted, then reopened to check that the page count is unchanged and that no password is asked for.
- Read the result card for each document. A wrong entry gives "Incorrect password" and turns the button into "Try again" so you can re-enter it.
- Open unlocked- plus the original name (or unlocked-pdfs.zip for several files) and confirm it opens without a prompt.
Worked example
Load statement.pdf, an 8-page bank statement locked against opening. The card shows that it requires a user phrase. Enter the known secret and press Unlock & Remove Password. The result card reads "Unlocked (AES-256 removed). Post-check passed: 8 pages as in the original and no prompt required" and reports that the text layer is intact, so searching for a word in unlocked-statement.pdf works.
When to use this tool
- Removing the password from a payslip you receive monthly so it opens quickly.
- Making a print-restricted PDF that you own printable in a workflow that blocks restricted files.
- Producing a plain copy of a protected file with its text intact to attach to a form or run through OCR-free search.
Important limitations
Requires the correct password for files locked with an open password. It cannot crack unknown passwords, perform brute-force dictionary attacks, or bypass external DRM certificate servers. Removing restrictions is meant for files you are entitled to change. Only standard password encryption is handled; the qpdf code is downloaded from a CDN on first use.

Frequently asked questions
Can it crack a password I have forgotten?
No. It requires the correct secret for documents locked against opening, and it makes no attempt to guess one. It is meant for files you are entitled to access.
Is the text still selectable after unlocking?
Yes. The file is decrypted with qpdf (WebAssembly) rather than redrawn, so text, links, bookmarks and form fields are kept. After unlocking, the tool compares the number of text characters on the first pages with the original and shows both counts when they differ.
What is the difference between an open password and restrictions?
An open secret is needed to view the document at all. Restrictions (an owner lock) only limit printing, copying or editing and the document opens without typing anything. The diagnosis card tells you which one you have, and restriction-only files can be unlocked with the box left empty.
Can I unlock several files at once?
Yes. Select them together and the same password is tried on each. Files that unlock download as unlocked-pdfs.zip; files with the wrong password are listed so you can retry them.
Does an unencrypted file change?
No. It is reported as not encrypted, left unchanged and not included in the output.
Do my files leave my computer?
No. Decryption runs in this tab. The only network request fetches the qpdf and pdf.js code from the jsDelivr CDN, so the first use needs a connection.
