How to use Random Team Generator

  1. Type names into "Names (one per line)"; commas also split names, and every name must be unique regardless of capitals.
  2. Set "Divide by" to "Number of teams" or "People per team" and enter the "Amount" (1 to 100).
  3. Press "Create balanced teams" to see cards headed Team 1, Team 2 and so on, each with a member count.
  4. Press "Shuffle again" (available after the first run) to redeal the same list into new teams.
  5. Read the status line, which confirms everyone was placed once and that team sizes differ by no more than one.

Worked example

Enter Amina, Bilal, Chen, Dalia, Emeka, Farah, Gita, Hugo and Ines, choose "Number of teams" and an Amount of 4. Team 1 receives three names and Teams 2, 3 and 4 receive two each. The status reads "9 people were assigned once across 4 balanced teams. Team sizes differ by no more than one."

When to use this tool

  • Splitting a class of 27 into groups of four or five for a project.
  • Dividing weekend five-a-side players into fair random sides.
  • Assigning workshop attendees to breakout tables without anyone choosing seats.

Important limitations

Basic shuffling does not account for skill, availability, relationships, or accessibility needs unless you use the advanced skill-balancing and keep-together/keep-apart options below.

Frequently asked questions

How are sizes worked out in "People per team" mode?

The tool rounds up: teams = ceiling of names divided by amount. Ten names at 3 per team makes four teams of 3, 3, 2 and 2, not three full teams plus a leftover pair.

Why does "Smith, John" create two people?

Commas split entries just like line breaks do. Write "John Smith" without a comma, or put each person on a separate line, so surname and first name are not separated.

Which errors can appear?

Fewer than two names, a repeated name, an amount that is not a whole number, or more teams than people. Repeats are refused so nobody is placed twice; add a middle initial for two people called Alex.

Can I keep certain people apart or balance skill levels?

Yes. Use the Advanced team builder below the results: enable skill-score balancing (snake draft), list keep-together or keep-apart pairs, and optionally auto-name teams with a captain pick — all computed locally in your browser.

Is the split saved anywhere?

No. Reloading clears the list and the teams, so copy the cards elsewhere before leaving the page. Blank lines between names are ignored, so tidy spacing is not required.
