How to use PDF to Word (DOCX)
- Select the PDF under "Select PDF Document"; the card shows page count and size.
- Look at the extraction summary, which reports Pages, Extracted Words, Headings and Text Type (Selectable Digital Text or Image Scan).
- Tick or clear "Smart Paragraph Reflow" to merge wrapped lines into paragraphs, and "Detect Headings & Bold Typography" to turn large text into heading styles.
- Press "Convert to Word (.docx)", or use "Export Markdown (.md)" or "Export Text (.txt)" for plain formats.
- Press "Download .docx Document" and open it in your word processor.
Worked example
A one-page PDF has a 20 pt title "Annual Report" and body lines "Sales grew in 2025 and", "costs stayed flat.", "Next year we plan" and "to hire." With both options on, the summary shows Headings 1. The DOCX holds a Heading 1 paragraph, then "Sales grew in 2025 and costs stayed flat.", then "Next year we plan to hire." as two paragraphs, because a sentence-ending mark starts a new one.
When to use this tool
- Recovering editable text from a contract received only as PDF.
- Exporting an article to Markdown with one clean paragraph per block.
- Testing whether a supposed text PDF is really a scan before trying conversion elsewhere.
Important limitations
This extracts selectable text and basic page breaks. It does not promise pixel-perfect layout, images, complex tables, forms, columns, fonts, or OCR for scanned pages.
Frequently asked questions
Will scanned PDFs work?
No. The tool reads text stored in the PDF, and an image scan has none. It reports Image Scan (Low Text) and produces an almost empty document because there is no OCR step.
What size counts as a heading?
Text of 18 points or more becomes Heading 1, and 15 to 17 points becomes Heading 2. Smaller text stays as body text, so a title set below 15 points does not become a heading.
Are images, tables and columns kept?
No. The DOCX contains only paragraphs of text separated by page breaks. Pictures are dropped, tables become lines of text, and multi-column layouts are read in storage order.
Is bold formatting preserved?
Only when Smart Paragraph Reflow is off, where bold lines are marked bold. With reflow on, lines are merged into plain paragraphs and bold is lost.
Do headings look like headings in Word?
The file names the Heading styles but carries no style definitions, so Word may show them as ordinary paragraphs. Re-apply the styles in Word if the navigation pane matters.
