How to use Countdown Timer
- Enter "Hours" (0 to 99), "Minutes" (0 to 59) and "Seconds" (0 to 59), or press a preset button from "1 min" to "1 hour".
- Note that editing any of the three fields resets the display at once, even if the timer is running.
- Press "Start Timer"; it turns into Pause and Resume, and the tab title shows the remaining time, for example "(00:14:59) Countdown".
- At zero a short chime plays and a "Time is up" alert dialog appears.
- Press "Reset" to reload the time from the three fields.
Worked example
Set Hours 1, Minutes 30 and Seconds 0. The display shows 01:30:00; press "Start Timer" and after 60 seconds it reads 01:29:00. Alternatively, choose the "5 min" preset for 00:05:00. At zero a dialog says the time is up, and "Start Timer" returns to its idle label.
When to use this tool
- Timing a 15-minute presentation rehearsal with the title showing in another tab.
- Counting down a 10-minute tea steep or oven check.
- Running a 30-minute exam practice slot from the preset button.
Important limitations
The timer counts down against a fixed end time, so it stays accurate even when the tab is backgrounded or throttled; enable notifications or sound so you do not miss completion while away from the tab.
Frequently asked questions
How does it differ from the Pomodoro timer?
Countdown accepts any length up to 99 hours and shows a browser alert at zero. Pomodoro has four fixed modes, a completion counter and no alert dialog.
Can I type more than 59 into Seconds?
The field's stated maximum is 59, but the code simply adds whatever number is present, so 90 seconds becomes 1 minute 30 seconds of countdown. Using the Minutes field is clearer.
Will a hidden tab finish on time?
The timer decrements once per tick instead of comparing against the clock, so a throttled background tab may end late. Keep the tab visible when the exact moment matters.
What if I cannot hear the chime?
The chime is a short synthesized tone, and the alert dialog stays on screen until you dismiss it. On a muted device you still get the dialog, and the tab title has shown the remaining time all along.
Can it count down to a calendar date?
No. It counts down a duration from the moment you press Start rather than towards a calendar date or clock time, and a page reload resets the whole thing to the default.
