How to use Hreflang Tags Generator
- Press "Load Global Preset" to fill five example rows, or start with "+ Add Language / Region" for your own list.
- In each row choose a language in "Language (ISO 639-1)", optionally a region in "Region (ISO 3166-1)", and enter the "Target Page URL"; the trash button deletes a row.
- Set "Default Fallback URL (x-default)" for visitors whose language you do not target; clear the field to leave that line out.
- Click "HTML <link> Tags", "XML Sitemap Format" or "HTTP Header Format" and read the generated text in the output box.
- Press "Copy Output" and paste it into your head, sitemap or server configuration.
Worked example
Enter three rows: English with region US at https://example.com/, German with region DE at https://example.com/de/, and set x-default to https://example.com/. The HTML tab prints three lines: hreflang en-us, hreflang de-de and hreflang x-default, each as a link rel alternate with its href. The HTTP tab joins the same three entries after Link: separated by commas.

Important limitations
Generates standard ISO 639-1 language and ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes. Search engines require hreflang tags to be reciprocally confirmed on every targeted alternate page to prevent indexing ambiguity.

Frequently asked questions
What is x-default for?
It marks the page shown when no listed language or region fits the visitor, commonly a language selector or an international homepage. It is optional but recommended when you serve many markets.
Why are region codes lowercase?
The tool writes codes like en-us and en-gb in lowercase. Search engines read them case-insensitively, but the usual style is en-US, so change them by hand if your style guide requires it.
Does the tool check reciprocal links?
It prints the same complete set for you to place on every page, but it does not fetch your pages. Each language version must carry the full set, including a self-reference, or the annotations can be ignored.
What happens to rows without a URL?
They are skipped in every output format. A row with no region gives a language-only code such as de, which covers all regions of that language.
Which format should I choose?
Use the HTML tags in the head for ordinary pages, the XML sitemap format for large sites and the Link header for non-HTML files such as PDFs. Use just one method per URL to avoid conflicts.
