How to use Discount Calculator

  1. Open Calculation Mode and choose "Find Sale Price & Savings", "Find Original Price" or "Find Discount %"; the two price labels change to match.
  2. Enter Original Price ($) and Primary Discount (%), and, in the first mode only, add a Stacked Coupon / Extra Discount (%, optional).
  3. Set Sales Tax Rate (%, optional) and Quantity; the tax defaults to 8.25, so clear it to see pre-tax figures alone.
  4. Press "Calculate discount & price" and read the numbered steps in the box above the button.
  5. Press "Download Summary (TXT)" to save the per-unit and batch totals.

Worked example

Choose "Find Original Price", enter 63.00 as the Sale / Final Price and 30 as Discount Received, and set Sales Tax Rate to 0. The steps line reads 63.00 ÷ 0.7000 = 90.00. The result shows Sale Price (Pre-Tax) 63.00 per unit and Savings 27.00 per unit (30.0% off), so the tag price was 90.00.

When to use this tool

  • Working out what a jacket cost before a 30% clearance markdown.
  • Seeing the final price with a percentage coupon layered on a store sale.
  • Finding the real percentage discount when a shop only displays old and new prices.

Important limitations

Applies successive percentage reductions sequentially to the diminishing subtotal. Check local merchant policy to confirm whether sales tax is calculated before or after manufacturer and store coupons.

Frequently asked questions

Are stacked discounts added together?

No. The second percentage is applied to the already reduced price, so 20% then 10% gives 28% off overall, not 30%. The steps box shows both stages so you can see the compounded saving.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Pick the original-price mode, enter the final price and the discount received. The tool divides the price by one minus the discount, so 63 at 30% off returns 90. A 100% discount is rejected.

What does the Find Discount % mode return?

Enter the original and the sale price, and it reports (original − sale) ÷ original as a percentage. It stops with an error if the sale price is higher than the original.

Is tax applied before or after the discount?

After. Tax is charged on the discounted sale price, then multiplied by quantity for the batch total. Rules differ by jurisdiction, so confirm how your seller treats coupons.

Why do some lines only appear sometimes?

Tax lines show only when the rate is above zero, and the multi-unit block appears only when Quantity exceeds one. Leaving the optional fields empty keeps the output short.
