How to use Tip Calculator
- Type the receipt total in Bill Amount ($) and, if the bill contains sales tax, that amount in the optional tax box.
- Set the percentage or tap a Quick Preset button such as 18% (Good) or 25% (Exceptional), which recalculates immediately.
- Choose the calculation basis: "Pre-Tax Subtotal (Standard)" or "Total with Tax".
- Enter Number of People Splitting and choose a Rounding Preference such as "Round Up Per Person (Whole $)".
- Press "Calculate & split", then "Copy Summary" to paste each person's share into a group chat.
Worked example
Enter Bill Amount 96.40, Sales Tax Included 8.40, 20%, basis Pre-Tax Subtotal, 3 people, Exact Cents. Subtotal = 96.40 − 8.40 = 88.00, gratuity = 88.00 × 0.20 = 17.60, total = 114.00. Each person pays 38.00: a base share of 32.13 plus a service share of 5.87.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a gratuity by hand?
Multiply the bill by the percentage written as a decimal: a $50 bill at 20% is 50 × 0.20 = $10, so you pay $60. For 15%, multiply by 0.15; a quick check is 10% (move the decimal point one place left) plus half of that. To calculate on the pre-tax subtotal, subtract the tax from the bill first.
Why does the pre-tax basis give a smaller amount?
The tax is subtracted from the bill first, and the percentage is applied only to what remains. The tax field is ignored when you select the with-tax basis or leave it at zero, so the percentage then covers the whole bill.
What do the rounding options do?
Round Up Per Person bumps each share to a whole dollar, Round Up Total rounds the combined bill, and Round to Nearest Dollar rounds either way. The result then lists the effective gratuity and percentage.
Does the split divide the total evenly?
By default yes -- the combined total is divided equally among the people entered, listing each person's base share and service share. An itemised-split section further down lets you assign each diner their own items plus a share of any shared dishes, with tax and gratuity divided in proportion and cents reconciled so the shares add up exactly.
Are the etiquette notes on the page strict rules?
No, they are general regional hints: 15 to 20% is common in North America and 10 to 12.5% in the UK and Europe when service is not included. Local customs vary, so check your bill first.
What is the maximum group size?
The people field accepts up to 50, and any value below one is treated as one. Fractions of a person are not meaningful, so use whole numbers.
