How to use Video Compressor
- Choose a clip with "Choose a local file" (files above 250 MB are refused).
- Open "Target constraint / Mode" and pick a size-oriented option ("Discord free / Email (< 8 MB)", "WhatsApp / Mobile (< 16 MB)", "Gmail / Outlook (< 25 MB)") or a quality-oriented one (CRF 22, 26 or 32).
- Set "Resolution" to "Keep Original Resolution", "Downscale to 720p HD" or "Downscale to 480p SD"; smaller frames shrink the file and encode faster.
- Press "Process file" and allow the first run to fetch the roughly 32 MB engine; the percentage line tracks progress.
- Download compressed.mp4 from the result box; use "Cancel" to abort, which unloads the engine.
Worked example
Take a 60-second 1080p screen recording, pick "Discord free / Email (< 8 MB)" and "Downscale to 720p HD". The plan is 480 kbps video plus 96 kbps audio, so about 576 kbps × 60 s ÷ 8 = 4.3 MB before overhead. Expect roughly 4 to 5 MB in compressed.mp4; a 5-minute clip in the same mode would come out near 21 MB, well above 8.

Important limitations

Frequently asked questions
Does the Discord or WhatsApp mode guarantee the size limit?
No. Those modes set a fixed video bitrate (about 480 kbps for Discord, 950 kbps for WhatsApp, 1500 kbps for Gmail), so the size depends on duration. Clips longer than about two minutes can exceed the named limit.
What is the difference between the CRF options?
CRF modes target constant quality instead of size. Lower numbers keep more detail and give larger files: 22 is high quality, 26 balanced and 32 maximum compression, so results vary greatly with the footage.
Why is processing slow?
Encoding runs as WebAssembly inside your browser tab, using a single processing thread. A minute of 1080p footage can take several minutes, so choose 720p or a lower quality when time matters.
Will the original audio survive?
Audio is re-encoded to AAC at 96 kbps for Discord and Maximum Compression, 192 kbps for High Quality, and 128 kbps otherwise. A clip with no audio track can be handled differently by the engine.
Which output container is produced?
Always MP4 with H.264 video, with the index placed at the front so it starts streaming quickly. Input formats such as MOV or WebM are accepted if the engine can read them.
