How to use Markdown Table Generator

  1. Edit cells directly in the grid; a Feature / ToolkitPoint / Traditional SaaS table is preloaded and its first row is always the header.
  2. Use "+ Add Row", "- Del Row", "+ Add Column" and "- Del Column"; deletion always removes the last row or column.
  3. Set each column's alignment with the small selector above it: ":---" for left, ":---:" for centre or "---:" for right.
  4. Open "Import CSV, TSV, Excel, or Existing Markdown Table", paste data and press "Import Data"; "Load Sample Table" fills a four-column pricing grid.
  5. Watch "Generated Markdown", toggle "Pretty-aligned columns", then use "Copy Markdown", "Copy HTML <table>" or "Download .md".

Worked example

Set the grid to two columns and two lines: Item, Qty in the header and Pen, 12 below, with the Qty column set to right alignment. Pretty output is three lines. The first is "| Item | Qty |", the second is the separator "| :--- | ---: |", and the third is "| Pen | 12 |". Each column is padded to four characters, the width of the widest cell.

When to use this tool

  • Tidying a comparison table before pasting it into a README.
  • Converting cells copied from a spreadsheet into a pipe table for a wiki.
  • Producing the same table as an HTML block for a page that lacks Markdown support.

Important limitations

Follows GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) pipe table specifications. Cells cannot contain raw unescaped newlines or pipes. Multi-line cells should use <br> tags according to GFM guidelines.

Frequently asked questions

How are pipe characters inside cells handled?

Each pipe is written with a leading backslash so it cannot split the column, in both the pretty and compact styles. Cells are single-line text boxes, so line breaks are not possible unless you type a br tag your renderer allows.

Does importing an existing Markdown table keep its alignments?

No. The import reads the cells but drops the separator row without reading its colons, so alignment falls back to whatever the column selectors already show. Reapply alignment with the selectors after importing.

How is pasted CSV split?

On commas, or on Tabs when a line has one, trimming each cell and ignoring quote marks, so "Smith, John" becomes two cells. Cells copied from a spreadsheet arrive Tab-separated and import cleanly.

What does pretty alignment do?

It pads every cell to the widest one in its column so the raw text lines up in a monospaced editor, while compact writes single spaces. Both render the same. Widths are counted in characters, so emoji or wide scripts may look uneven in raw text.

Which Markdown flavour does it target?

GitHub-style pipe tables, which need a header row and a separator line. Plain Markdown without table support will show the raw pipes, and column spans or multi-line cells cannot be expressed.
