How to use Split PDF
- Pick your file under "Select to Split"; the grid fills with one numbered pill per page, all selected.
- Choose a "Split Method:" such as Extract Every Page, Extract Custom Page Ranges, Split Every N Pages, Split by Target File Size or Split Odd & Even Pages.
- Fill the field that appears for that method: "Page Ranges" (for example 1-3, 5, 8-10), "Pages per split file:" or "Maximum File Size:" (5, 10, 20 or 25 MB).
- Click pills to deselect pages, or use "Select All" and "Deselect All"; this affects every method except custom ranges.
- Press the split button, then save files singly or press "Download All as ZIP".
Worked example
Load a 12-page handbook file. With Split Every N Pages set to 5, the splitter creates three output files covering pages 1 to 5, 6 to 10, and 11 to 12, and the status counts three parts. With Extract Custom Page Ranges and 1-3, 5, 8-10 it creates three range-named files instead.
When to use this tool
- Cutting a long scanned pack into chapter files before emailing each recipient their part.
- Separating odd and even pages after scanning a two-sided document in two passes.
- Breaking a 40 MB report into parts that fit a 10 MB upload limit.
Important limitations
Splitting creates new PDF documents and invalidates preexisting digital cryptographic signatures, but does not alter underlying vector or image quality.
Frequently asked questions
Do page selections apply to custom ranges?
No. Custom ranges read only the text you typed and ignore the pill selection, while the other four methods use only the selected pages. Deselected pages simply do not appear in any output.
How accurate is Split by Target File Size?
It builds and measures each candidate part's real byte size with pdf-lib rather than estimating, backing a page out to the next part if it would exceed the cap. Only a single page that alone exceeds the cap is flagged rather than guaranteed to fit.
What happens to range entries I mistype?
Anything that does not match a number or a range such as 4-7 is skipped silently, and numbers beyond the last page are dropped. If nothing valid is left, the status says No valid page groups found.
How are the output files named?
They take the original name plus a suffix that depends on the method: -page-3, -pages-1-to-5, -range-8-10, -part-2, -odd-pages or -even-pages. That makes it easy to tell them apart inside the ZIP.
Can it open an encrypted document?
It loads the file while ignoring the encryption flag, but results on a password-protected document are unreliable. Remove the password with the Unlock tool first.
