How to use Markdown to HTML
- Type or paste text into 'Markdown Source'; a sample table and checklist is preloaded.
- Pick 'Markdown Flavor': GitHub Flavored for tables, task lists and strikethrough, or CommonMark for the strict subset.
- Keep 'Sanitize Output' ticked to strip script tags, iframes, on* attributes and javascript links.
- Watch 'Live Rendered HTML Preview' update, then press 'Generate HTML' for the markup text.
- Use 'Download HTML Document' to save the result as a standalone page.
Worked example
Type ## Notes, then a blank line, then **Bold** and *italic* with `code`, and press 'Generate HTML'. The output is <h2>Notes</h2>, a blank line, then <p><strong>Bold</strong> and <em>italic</em> with <code>code</code></p>. Switching to CommonMark leaves this sample identical, because headings and emphasis are not GitHub-specific.

Important limitations
Markdown dialects differ across platforms. This tool follows CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) for headings, code blocks, emphasis and GFM task lists; plain bullet/numbered lists, setext headings, indented code blocks and reference-style links are not yet converted (the built-in conformance checker below the result discloses exactly which cases pass). Custom server-side tags or raw script injections are sanitized.
Frequently asked questions
Does it convert bullet and numbered lists?
Not in this version. Only task items like '- [ ]' and '- [x]' are recognized, and they become bare list items with no surrounding list element. Plain '- item' lines stay as text.
What changes under CommonMark?
Tables, task lists and ~~strikethrough~~ are switched off, so those lines pass through as ordinary text. Headings, emphasis, links, images, code and quotes still convert.
Is Sanitize Output a security guarantee?
No. It removes patterns with regular expressions and a raw HTML tag can still slip through. Untrusted Markdown should be cleaned again on your server.
How are quotes and code handled?
Each line starting with > becomes its own blockquote, so a multi-line quote gives several blocks. Fenced code keeps its language class and has its content escaped.
Does it read underscore emphasis?
No, only asterisks are recognized, as in **bold** and *italic*. Underscore versions such as _word_ or __word__ are left exactly as typed, so switch them to asterisks before converting.
How are tables and links produced?
In GitHub mode a header row, a divider row such as | :--- | ---: | and body rows become a table whose columns follow the colons for alignment. Links get a noopener attribute, and images become plain img tags with alt text.
