How to use Remove Extra Spaces
- Paste the messy text into "Paste text with extra spaces".
- Review the five options: "Collapse multiple spaces into single space", "Trim leading & trailing space per line", "Collapse consecutive blank lines", "Convert tabs to single spaces" and "Normalize non-breaking spaces".
- Tick "Convert tabs to single spaces" only if tabs are clutter; the collapse option affects spaces and leaves tabs alone.
- Press "Remove extra spaces" and compare the [Stats: ...] summary of characters and lines before and after.
- Use "Download clean text" to save the result without the stats note.
Worked example
Input: "Hello world ", three blank lines, then "Bye now" (29 characters, 5 lines). With the default options the output is "Hello world", one blank line, "Bye now", and the note reads Original 29 chars, 5 lines → Cleaned 20 chars, 3 lines (9 chars removed).
When to use this tool
- Fixing double spaces left after copying text out of a PDF.
- Converting non-breaking spaces from a web page copy into ordinary ones before pasting into a spreadsheet.
- Tidying product descriptions with stray leading spaces before a CSV upload.
Important limitations
By default, spaces within intentional code indentation or preformatted code blocks will be normalized unless preserve-indentation options are applied.
Frequently asked questions
Which characters count as non-breaking or odd spaces?
U+00A0, the U+2000 to U+200B range, U+202F, U+205F and U+3000 are converted to normal blanks first. U+200B is zero-width, so it may become a visible gap.
Why are my double tabs still there?
Space collapsing targets spaces, form feeds and vertical tabs only. Tabs stay unless "Convert tabs to single spaces" is ticked, and then each tab becomes one space before collapsing.
Does it remove line breaks?
No. It only shortens three or more newlines in a row to two, so one blank line between paragraphs survives. The whole text is also trimmed at both ends.
Does the stats note travel with a copy?
The note is printed inside the result box, so remove it when copying by hand. The Download button saves only the cleaned text. Trailing blanks at the very end of the text are trimmed in the downloaded file as well.
How is this different from the Whitespace Remover?
This tool keeps single spaces and paragraph structure. The Whitespace Remover can delete every space, or join all lines into one. Choose that tool when you need lines joined, and this one when you want a tidy but recognisable layout.
