How to use Add Page Numbers to PDF
- Choose a file under "Choose a PDF" and note the page count shown in the notice.
- Set "Starting page number", for example 5 if the file continues from another document.
- Pick a "Numbering format": Number only, Page 1, 1 of N, or Page 1 of N.
- Choose "Position on page" among six corners and centres, and set "Font size (pt)" between 6 and 24.
- Tick "Skip first page (Keep cover / title page blank)" if the cover should stay clean, then press "Add Page Numbers".
- For Bates stamps, roman numerals, page ranges, a second section, mirrored duplex placement, font and colour, use the Advanced numbering block: choose one or more files, set the options and press "Apply advanced numbering". Several files share one continuous sequence.
Worked example
Take a 10-page report, choose Page 1 of N, Bottom Right, 10 pt and tick Skip first page. The cover stays blank, page 2 shows Page 1 of 9 and page 10 shows Page 9 of 9. The result reads Stamped page numbers onto 9 pages (Skip first page: Yes), and the file is saved as numbered.pdf.
When to use this tool
- Adding page numbers to a merged bundle that will be printed for a hearing.
- Keeping a cover blank while numbering the rest of a thesis draft.
- Continuing numbering from page 21 for a chapter exported separately.
Important limitations
Stamping page numbers draws visible text over the page. The advanced block warns about overlap with existing text, but scanned pages have no text layer to check, so review them.
Frequently asked questions
How does Skip first page change the numbering?
The cover gets no number and the second page receives the starting value. With start 1, page 2 shows 1. In the of-N formats, N also drops by one, so a 10-page file reads 1 of 9 on page 2.
Does N include the starting offset?
No. N is only the count of pages numbered. Starting at 5 in a 10-page file gives 5 of 10 on page 1, not 5 of 14, so this format is best used with the default start of 1.
Which font and colour are used?
Helvetica in a dark grey, at the size you choose. Position uses fixed offsets: 20 points from the bottom or about 24 from the top, and 28 points from the side edges.
Can I number only some pages?
Yes. The Advanced numbering block has first and last page fields, and a second section that can restart in a different style, for example roman numerals for front matter. The basic options above only offer Skip first page.
Can the numbers collide with existing footers?
The basic options stamp at a fixed position and can overlap a footer. The Advanced block checks pages that have a text layer, warns about overlaps and can shift the number inward; scanned pages cannot be checked, so look at them yourself.
